Diesel Marine Services was established in 1986 and provided a mechanical service to the local fishing industry. As the industry grew, naturally so did the business. Over a period of 25 years the skill base of the company took on a more diversified role, undertaking major contracts locally and internationally. In 2001 DMS gained operational control of the slipway and ancillary services at Billy Lights Point, extending the degree of services offered to clients. In 2002, DMS opened a new premise, Q Mechanical Services Pty Ltd .

The new division was aimed at servicing the mechanical needs of shore based industry and the private sector, with service and repair of automotive vehicles, trucks and material handing solutions. With a large supplier base and relationship built up over time, Q Mechanical also has capabilities including fabrication/boiler making, machine shop, hydraulic and cylinder head reconditioning services. Q Mechanical has always played a role in servicing the marine industry, complementing the services offered by Diesel Marine Services. Along with newly added services.

In 2007, as DMS moved away from the slipway, Q Mechanical worked to expand its marine based mechanical service, employing several highly experienced marine fitters. Q Mechanical is now the largest workshop on the Eyre Peninsula to have all these services under one roof, including a parts and services store onsite.
